The Empire Windrush arrived at the port of Tilbury on 22 June 1948, carrying 492 passengers from Jamaica wishing to start a new life in the United Kingdom. The passengers were the first large group of West Indian immigrants to come to this country.

Many Windrush passengers settled in Clapham and Brixton.  When trying to make a new life in London they faced many challenges including trying to find a job and coping with the cold weather.

Some British people were unhappy about their arrival and they had to cope with racist treatment too.

Can you find out more about the experiences of those who came over from the West Indies?

What was life like for them in London and what contribution did they make to this country?

How did local people feel about their arrival?

Do you have family who are originally from the West Indies?  What can they tell you about this important time?
